Curriculum Vision for Science

Our Key Stage 3 (KS3) curriculum is designed to support every student on their journey through secondary Science.

Each Big Idea in the KS3 syllabus is fully covered and directly feeds into the GCSE content. Our curriculum helps students achieve and exceed the mastery goals, whilst sparking their curiosity in science. The KS3 curriculum in science gradually builds the maths, literacy, practical and enquiry skills needed for progression to GCSE.

Curriculum Intent

Science Skills
In this topic students cover safety, science equipment, measuring, using a Bunsen burner and investigative skills.

Students cover cells as the fundamental unit of living organisms, including how to observe, interpret and record cell structure using a light microscope.  The structures of a cell and their functions, similarities and differences between plant and animal cells. They will also cover the difference between unicellular and multicellular, the structural adaptations of unicellular organisms and the hierarchical organisation of multicellular organisms. The students will also learn about the role of diffusion in the movement of materials in and between cells.

Particle Model
Students explain the properties of solids, liquids and gases based on their arrangement of particles. The changes of state are covered and energy changes involved. Diffusion observations are made and explanations based on the net movement of particles are used.
The concept of a pure substance, identification of pure substances, mixtures including dissolving and simple techniques for separating mixtures including filtration, evaporation, distillation and chromatography are also covered

Acids & Alkalis
Students cover features of chemical reactions, safe use of acids and alkalis, pH scale, neutralisation and making salts. They are also introduced to the metal reactivity series, undergoing a range of reactions to promote their enquiry skills.

In this topic students identify energy content in food, investigate energy resources, define energy and power and conservation of energy.

Students cover current electricity in both series and parallel circuits. Potential difference, its unit, battery and bulb ratings, resistance and its unit. Finally the differences in resistance between conducting and insulating components are covered.

Light & Sound
This topic covers the ways in which sounds and light travels. Reflection, refraction and the different colours in light are investigated. Students use an Oscilloscope to measure sound waves.

This topic covers forces including force diagram, units of force, non-contact forces and force-extension linear relation with Hooke’s law as a special case. It will also cover opposing forces and equilibrium.

Students cover food chains and webs, as well as how population changes affect them.

Life Story
Using humans as an example of a mammal this will include the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems, menstrual cycle, gametes, fertilisation, gestation and birth including the effect of maternal lifestyle on the foetus through the placenta

Space will encompass gravity force, how to calculate weight, the difference in weight on different planets, gravity forces between the Earth and Moon and between the Earth and Sun. It will then cover the seasons and the Earth’s tilt, our Sun as a star, other stars in our galaxy, other galaxies and light years as a unit of astronomical distance.
